Llantarnam (Nant Teyrnon-Brook of Teyrnon)

.. Opened 1954 and in 1971 became a `Comprehensive` .. 1250 pupils ..
.. June Peterson thought this picture might evoke some nostalgic memories from my female audience ..

In Llantarnam School, approximately 1966, each girl had to have COMPULSORY HOME ECONOMICS i.e. cookery and sewing. We made these cookery aprons in white cotton with a trim on the front and the pocket in gingham the colour of the house you were in, in my case green house or Morgannwg. I recently came across these items in the loft, but they are my own I hasten to add! We were also taught very important crafts such as how to wash and iron a handkerchief, embroider a tray cloth and subsequently lay a tray for afternoon tea! After we had made the aprons we proceeded to actual cookery, firstly scrambled egg on toast we then made Victoria sponge, sausage rolls including making flaky pastry from scratch, scotch eggs, apple pie and many traditional items. We would have a lesson of practical cooking and the next lesson would be a theory lesson where we would write the minute details.. After each cooking session we had to wash the rolling pin, bowl and sieve and also the wooden scrub top tables (probably not health & safety pc now!). During sewing lessons we made the cookery apron and a pleated gym skirt (again in the colour of your house). Mrs Harris and Mrs Thomas were the cookery teachers and Mrs Forrest-Jones was the needlework teacher.I think eventually these type of lessons became non-compulsory (likewise metalwork and woodwork for the boys) and more emphasis was placed on academia. Consequently many young people these days can't cook and belong to the "ping" dynasty i.e. the microwave school of cookery - ready meals and `take aways`. Although we often poured scorn on our education I think it stood us in good stead. After we had made various items they would be entered into the annual School Eisteddfod. If your tray cloth was embroidered well or your Victoria sponge was outstanding it represented your House and points were awarded. The House with the most points won the Shield (I know, how exciting is that!).When we finished our education (in my case 6th form) not many of us had an opportunity to go to University. You would have to be exceptionally bright to further your education, perhaps to study medicine, law or teaching. I think most of my contemporaries (male and female) found a job with the local big industries such as Girling Ltd, Saunders Valve Co. ltd, Burtons Biscuits or one of the shops and offices in Cwmbran Town Centre.

This team actually played together from 1966/67 season to the end of the 1970/71 season. We were coached during this period by our two sports masters Mr. Len Constance and Mr. Dave Paley, who was a WBA Heavyweight Boxing Champion. Towards the end of the 1970/71 season, Mr. Terry Cobner joined the school staff and he became our rugby coach. From memory I recall we lost our very first game, cannot remember who it was against. However from then on, until the end of the 1970/71 season, we never lost another game against teams of our own age group winning every game.During our last season we actually started to play against teams older than ourselves, winning from what I can remember most of these games as well.

Stephen Lawrence:- I was in this school between 1981 and 1988. I remember old Mr Sheen (or `Batman`) as we all called him during assembly. Any one remember Mr. Russell, Head of Lower school? Would you believe he is now a Vicar !! We had a laugh then. Mr. Harrison was our Games Teacher, he is still there I think, although he must be due for retirement by now !!
What happened to old Mr Paley? any body know? What a teacher he was! The sound of his voice when he shouted "Get agen the wall" still strikes fear into me now!
