Did you know? ...
Cwmbran Centre for Young People is a voluntary sector drop in centre for young people up to the age of 25.
The centre is open 6 days a week.
The SAVY Project (young people's training project) which, after 3 successful years is now nearing the end of it's funding, will have seen upon completion over 1000 beneficiaries. The project works with disadvantaged young people mainly between the ages of 16-25 (but also in a position to identify and work with those 14-16 year olds, in danger of disaffecting) using a range of innovative methods to help them develop skills and gain qualifications (N.V.Q`s) to equip them for further learning, training and employment.
Young Peoples Counselling Project: Provides volunteer counsellors, allowing 90 young people to gain some counselling support last year. This is supported by a mentoring and outreach project giving added skills and opportunities. Groups of youth workers, trainees and three school groups have undergone mentor training and will use their newly developed skills to help other young people.
The Outreach Project: This project has identified and supported over 300 young people and provides regular activities and trips.
The Healthy Living Project: This project encompasses a Gymnasium, Kitchen and many recreational and outdoor activities.
Butterflies - The Young Mums group: meet once a week and offers crche facilities, numerous trips and many training opportunities.
The Lunch Club: The Chef is supported by SAVY trainees and volunteers, who on a weekly basis, provide a 3 course meal for the older community in Pontnewydd at Mount Pleasant Hall. On average 15 + Adults attend on a regular basis.
The Centre also provides a Football Team which plays in the Newport & District league.
Whilst the Centre works in partnership with a number of agencies it has to be noted that the C.C.Y.P. is a voluntary organisation and a registered charity. As such the Centre is heavily indebted to it's funders and in particular it's core funders; namely:- Cwmbran Community Council, Croesyceiliog and Llanyrafon Community Council and Torfaen County Borough Council.
It is vitally important that sufficient core funding is provided to attract the necessary `additional` funding necessary to enable the Centre to develop the staffing, range of activities and opportunities for young people.
