.. Head Office and Works of Saunders Valve Co. Ltd - Grange Road (date unknown) ..
Norman Nicholas responds: This photograph looks like the original Saunders Valve factory site before any extensions and the car park were built. I believe the factory to the right may have been Hot Press Products which Saunders Valve bought at a later date which was the main production and machine shop area. That has since been demolished after Saunders (now Crane Process Flow) moved production to India. I worked at Saunders Valve for 40 years from 1965 until 2005 and in that time it went from 2,500 employees to its present workforce of about 175.(2010) It Hs been sold several times, firstly by the original directors to Gallagher (the tobacco people who made Benson & Hedges cigarettes) then to Alfa Laval (The milking machine manufacturer who also had a factory in Oakfield) and lastly to Crane Valves - an American company who are the present owners.

Hmm, I wonder where this is ? ..
John Howard responds: This is the façade of Llanfrechfa Grange. It became a Maternity Hospital in the 1940’s and a Mental Institution in the 1960’s. Edward, Prince of Wales representing his father George V stayed over here when he visited Cwmbrân and the Eastern Valley district of South Wales in the late 1920s. These tours at the time of the 1930’s to areas of such high unemployment, economic depression and deprivation in Britain made Edward very popular with the working class. . . It’s also where I was born in 1949.

.. This is a view from old Cwmbran looking down Victoria Street, Ventnor Road runs off to the left - Back in the early 1900`s when this photo was taken the building on the left was a Police Station and the `centrepiece` on the island was I believe a `pissoir` (Gentlemans WC ) and was nicknamed `St.Paul`s` due to the domed roof, that epitomises St.Paul`s Cathedral in London.

John Howard relates :This is a photograph of The Crescent circa 1960. The wooden fence on the left-hand side of the street belongs to the Doble household at No.38 and the first dwelling on the right-hand side is No. 41, the Howard household, our home. Ron Dando's fields and the Pentre hill form the backdrop of the photograph, taken many years before the Hollybush housing estate was built.

This photograph, taken in the mid 1960`s, is a view looking down Woodside Road running into Coronation Road - Forge Hammer. The bridge once held the Monmouthshire Eastern Valleys (railway) Line but now is the route of Cwmbran Drive.

This photograph taken in October 1956, shows the junction of Woodside Road, Maendy Way and Chapel Street -Pontnewydd. Notice the pavement on the right is partly finished. The white cottages to the right were known as Nightingale Row (now demolished) behind them, can be seen the houses of Trinity Road Ty box Road and the blocks of flats known as Nightingale House.
