.. Mixed Class circa 1938-39..
Martyn Stinton contributes this photograph belonging to his Mother-in-law Joan Taylor (nee Aston), it was taken when she was about 6 or 7, she can't remember any of the children's` names in the photo except for her friend Joan Thomas. The photo was taken about 1937-38; Joan my Mother-in-law was born in 1931.
Joan Aston is in middle row 3rd from left and her friend Joan Thomas is same row 6th from the left she said the male teachers name was Mr. Hills but cant remember the name of the woman teacher. One thing she does remember is that there were a few Joans in her class.
I was wondering if you could add this photo to your collection in the hope that others might recognise the other children; my Mother-in-law will be 80years old in May 2011 email: Martyn Stinton
I came across your photograph and found myself looking back to those halcyon days where the winters were cold and the summers were hot. My name is Basil Gough and I was born in June 1931 and lived in New Street Pontnewydd. I'm standing 3rd from left back row, next to me is Jack lavender, the lady teacher if my memory serves me correctly is Miss Millard, she lived in Park View. Front row I recognize Donald Poole, and John Price. I have looked for other names of classmates, such as Barbara Hanson, Joyce Williams, Barbara Scrace, George Wright, John Dixon, Derek Forster But unable to place them. Other teachers of that era was, David Davies, Myvanwy Rees, the Misses Beese (2) , The Vicar at that time was Reverend Smith, his son Basil also attended the school. Caretaker was Mr. Fletcher. He got the stoves up and running for those winter days. I often wonder how many of us are now left. I recently went to Rex Hopkins funeral, which reminds me HAROLD THOMAS who now wears the cloth, his brother John was also in our class,
Thanks for the memory.

Joan Bird who kindly contributed this photograph relates: The only person I can identify is Tony Jones (my uncle) who is the centre boy in the back row. His parents, Theo & Ann Jones, were licensees of the Forge Hammer Inn in Cwmbran from some time after 1914 until around 1922/23. As my uncle was born in 1909, I estimate the photo was taken around 1918/20.
