PREFACE

This is the first New Town to be established in Wales and Monmouthshire and it is the aim of the Corporation to set a standard of what a modern Industrial Town should be.

The area which has been designated for this development is already heavily industrialised, fortunately with a balanced diversity of industry, and the object is to provide homes mainly for those employed in the locality, many of whom have to travel long distances to work.

The new Cwmbran will be a self-contained town with a character of it's own, and to achieve this, all the amenities of modern life, including social, commercial, recreational and cultural facilities have to be provided.

It is the policy of the Corporation, as they proceed from stage to stage in the development of the new town, to enlist the aid of all those interested in the growth of a new Cwmbran; and it was only after much discussion and many consultations with official bodies and others concerned, that the draft Outline Plan was produced. This Outline Plan was explained and discussed at a series of local meetings attended by the public at large, at which useful criticisms and suggestions were made; meetings were also held with representatives of the local authorities and local industrialists with profitable results.

The Planning Consultants were then in a position to produce the Master Plan which gives a broad outline of the future layout of the Town.

It is an explanatory summary of this Master Plan which is now presented in this Pamphlet. It is hoped that the information contained in it will stimulate the interest of all concerned and that, with the continuation of the co-operation already existing the Corporation will be able to proceed towards their objective  -- to create a happy, friendly and pleasing town in which people will feel proud to live.
