The Pub sign of the ODDFELLOWS ARMS  - Unfortunately, the words on the scroll below the shield are misspelled.

It reads AMICA AMOR TEVERIDAS which in fact should read as AMICITIA AMOR et VERITAS

The Three Links above the shield represent the motto of the Oddfellows - Friendship, Love and Truth.

The Scroll holds the motto of the Oddfellows in Latin - 'Amicitia, Amor et Veritas'

The hourglass represents Time.

The Beehive represents both Industry (work) and Thrift (saving for the future).

The Crossed Keys represent both Knowledge and Security.

The Lamb and Flag are symbols used to represent Sacrifice and Innocence

The Oddfellows Society was officially set up in 1810 to protect and care for it's members, at a time when there was no welfare state, trade unions or National Health Service. It's aim then was to provide help to members when they needed it; a tradition that's very much alive today.

Being a non-profit making Society, owned by it's members, not shareholders, all profits are passed back to the members in the form of benefits.

The Society currently has 100,000 members nationwide all part of a thriving Branch network. These Branches organise many social activities in their local area - anything from a quiz night to a group holiday abroad - keeping alive the tradition of friendliness.

I remember the Cherry Tree Club well. When I was about 12 they had disco's every week. Mam and Dad (Jean and Arthur Thomas Upper Cwmbran) would go there every Sunday. Children's Christmas party was `brill ` and they used to arrange trips to Blackpool every September. Great times and Great memories L

What the devil has happened to some of the Pontnewydd waterholes !! The Kings Head is now a Chinese Garden (restaurant); and what has become of the Pontnewydd Inn !!! I suppose times move on but they were good pubs to drink in on a weekend.
