The Afon Llwyd or Grey River, probably and aptly named because of the discolouration of the water, due to its usage during the coal iron and steel industries which started in the latter part of the 18th century.
It was originally called Torfaen ( Breaker of Stones ), the mountainside that overlooks Cwmbran is called Mynydd Maen ( Mountain of Stones ).
It's source is near Blaenafon (World Heritage Site) and wends its way down through the valley towns of Pontypool and Cwmbran and finally joins the River Usk at a point slightly north east of Caerleon.
Thankfully today the Afon Llwyd is once again ..
