Hmmm, I wonder where I saw this ? ..

Robert Gwillim:- I think the photo shows the part of the canal to the South of Two Locks Road  ,To the right hand side of the photo, just out of view would be the Waterloo Pub, and in the distance along the canal would be Henllys Way.

Glenys Morgan:- This is taken from the canal bank about 50 yards south of the bridge at Two Locks, looking north towards the stretch which ends at Henllys Way.

Congratulations !!!

.. Photograph contributed by Dawn Jones ..

Gary Evans:- I'm going to have a guess, it looks like one of the old colliery workings down off Maendy Way, West Pontnewydd.

Webmaster :- Not quite correct Gary, but as the `Ventilation Shaft` at Upper Cwmbran did in theory  connect at one time to the Adit Colliery, off Maendy Way, West Pontnewydd and secondly because your email has travelled the furthest distance.

Congratulations !!!

Hmmm, I wonder where I saw this ? ..

Steve Morgan:- IT IS ONE OF THE BRIDGES OVER THE CANAL  WHERE B+Q IS NOW. IT WAS ORIGINALLY A LINK FROM THE PRECISION FORGINGS FACTORY TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CANAL. THERE WAS AN IRON BRIDGE NEXT TO THIS THAT THE RAILWAY WENT OVER TO JOIN UP WITH THE BRANCH LINE INTO CWMBRAN JUNCTION IN ORDER TO GET FINISHED GOODS TO NEWPORT MILL STREET STATION.

Congratulations !!!

Webmaster :- Upper Cwmbran School opened in 1868 to replace and  overcome crowding being experienced at the original School (room) above the Squirrel Inn, which was situated in `The Square` Upper Cwmbran. At one time it accommodated over one hundred pupils !!! The building was demolished in the early 1970`s and replaced with the latter Infants School and nursery.

The Queen Inn - Upper Cwmbran

Webmaster :- My father can remember back in the late 1950`s early 60`s the pub was in the middle of a row of cottages, whereby you entered into a room and at the rear was a `stable door` where a little old lady brought you your ale. The wooden barrels were outside on trestles and because of the steep embankment at the rear of the building there was `very little light`... he said, with a `glint in his eye` .. "it would take the first pint for your eyes to become accustomed to the dark and notice if anyone else was there "...

There was also a saying among Cwmbran tipplers .... The Queen lost her Crown in The Bush.

Three pubs in Upper Cwmbran within staggering distance, The Crown was situated just below The Bush (Still open, business as usual) but The Crown was demolished many years ago.

Congratulations !!!

Hmmm, I wonder where I saw this ? ..

Steve Morgan :- This is a picture of Springvale when it consisted of G.K.N  and Precision Forgings Ltd. They were situated between Clomendy Road and the Mon and Brecon canal. These were major employers up to the early 70's when they closed. They were demolished and the Springvale Industrial Estate was established by Cwmbran Development Corporation. The only building remaining from that era is the old G.K.N. works canteen which is now used as a Training Centre.

Hmmm, I wonder where I saw this ? ..

Glenys Morgan :- I think this is part of the mural originally sited near the pedestrian ramp by old Sainsburys, and I think it is in  the Water Garden, Town Centre.

Webmaster :- ... Situated at the Water Garden, Town Centre - `The Owl` which is one of six tiled panels which originally formed parts of a much larger Mural that was originally sited on the wall of the entrance to the `Up and Under` Public House which was near the pedestrian ramp, leading to the old Sainsbury`s car park.

An Inscription running along the top of the original Mural stated:

This mural is a gift to the people of Cwmbran, it was provided by J.Sainsbury Plc. with the development Corporation & the Cwmbran arts trust. It was designed and created by Polly Hope 1983-84.

Hmmm, I wonder where I saw this ? ..

Bob Gwillim :- I think the photo shows the bridge over the canal at Ty Coch. To the left of the photograph, on the far side of the canal is the area where Festive Products have their factory.
