Owing to the geographical position of Grange Works, the difficulties of transport were increased beyond all normal expectation.

Situated in the Eastern Valley of Monmouthshire, it is flanked by a number of other valleys, namely:-

Western Valley.

Sirhowy Valley.

Rhymney Valley.

Merthyr Valley.

Aberdare Valley.

Due to local labour shortage, these Valleys became recruitment areas, and were within a radius of approximately 40 miles from the factory.

At the peak period, more than 3,000 employees were conveyed daily to and from their homes.

Despite the black-out conditions, air raid warnings, long hours of travelling, coupled with the fact that the roads in the Welsh Valleys are comparatively narrow and twisted, the vehicles continued to operate, and no accidents were sustained.
