June 2007, I received an interesting email from Louise Post, who resides in
Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada
Louise wrote:-
I have enjoyed your website immensely, in particular
the photographs. My grandfather Elijah Dudley, son of James Dudley
and Caroline Cantle was born 30 November 1858 at The Square Cwmbran,
Upper Llanvrechva. His father was an Iron Miner. The family lived at
The Square Cwmbran from 1856 until moving in 1867 to Glamorgan
County. In 1887 my grandfather emigrated to Canada.
Would it be possible to have a copy of the photo of
The Square Cwmbran? It is the first photo I have seen and of course
in my mind I had pictured a square, like the `Squares` in London.
Oh how wrong I was, but thank you for correcting my image and making
it possible for me to see what The Square at Upper Cwmbran is
actually like. I would like to include this photograph in my Dudley
family history album.
Thank you for creating such a wonderful website. I
will visit it often.

Thank you so much for the photographs of
Cwmbran, thank you also for the map and the copy of the booklet "A
Search into the Past". This booklet is exactly what I have been
looking for and it is a joy to read. How marvellous to read about
the times my great grandparents and grandfather were alive and
living there. The photographs, map and booklet have made The Square
Cwmbran come alive for me and I thank you for that. Each item makes
a wonderful addition to my genealogy book on my grandfather Elijah
Dudley.

James Dudley of Cwmbran near Newport married Caroline Cantle of Cwmbran
near Newport on the 28th April 1856 in the Register Office,
District of Newport.

On 25 April 1857, son Enoch Dudley born at The Square Cwmbran, Upper
Llanvrechva ; father James Dudley, Iron Miner, mother Caroline Cantle.

On 30 November 1858, son Elijah Dudley (my grandfather)
born at The Square Cwmbran, Upper Llanvrechva; father James Dudley, Iron
Miner, mother Caroline Cantle.

On 25 September 1860, son James Dudley born at The Square Cwmbran, Upper
Llanvrechva; father James Dudley, Iron Miner, mother Caroline Cantle.

No record of this family on the 1861 Census. This man avoided the
census like the plague and is not found on any census except when he was
a child.

On 28 March 1862, son James Dudley, aged 18 months, died at Cwmbran,
Upper Llanvrechva of Whooping Cough after 9 days; son of James Dudley
Coal Mine, buried All Saints Churchyard, Upper Llanvrechva.

On the 9th March 1863, son James Dudley Jr. born at Cwmbran,
Upper Llanvrechva; father James Dudley, Iron Miner, mother Caroline
Cantle.

30 June 1863, sons Enoch Dudley, Elijah Dudley and James Dudley Jr;
baptised Pontypool Methodist Chapel, parents James & Caroline Dudley,
Miner, Upper Cwmbran

On 07 September 1866, son George Dudley born at Upper Llanvrechva;
father James Dudley Miner, mother Caroline Cantle.

About 1867, the family left Cwmbran for Ystradyfodwg, Llanwanno Parish,
Pontypridd District, Glamorgan County. In later years, James Dudley, wife
Caroline and son Enoch were all buried in All Saints Churchyard, Upper
Llanvrechva.
