Documentary evidence states there was a mill here in 1632 and William Rees, on his map of 14th century South Wales and the Borders, plots a "Mill on Avon". Could this be Llanyrafon Mill?
The Mill was part of the Manor of Edlogan which was owned by the Griffith family from the 1600s until 1880. After that, there were many different owners and millers until production ceased in 1951 and the building was gutted by fire in the 1970`s.
Water to drive the overshot wheel was taken from the river Avon Lwyd, about half a mile to the north, and returned to the river after passing Llanyrafon Farm.
The existing 3 storeyed corn mill with an overshot wheel has seen many changes, it had 3 sets of stones for grinding corn. It served a large area and some very important houses including Tredegar House, the home of the Morgan family in Newport.
In the 1980`s Torfaen Borough council had a new roof put on so as to protect and safeguard the fabric of the building.
The Friends of Llanyrafon Mill was formed in 1995 to raise awareness of the mill. As a community project, working in conjunction with Torfaen County Borough Council. The Friends aim to restore Llanyrafon mill to working condition facility which will be an asset to the County Borough.
