Well Nigel, I have to say that your website really deserves some recognition, I have been using your site for a few years now and the amount of information both past and present that endlessly keeps flowing surely makes this one of the best community websites in Wales, Nigel, have you sat down and realised how much enjoyment and how many memories you have brought to the people of Cwmbran over the past few years? its endless, I, myself, have found so many long lost friends and neighbours. You have provided a fantastic service to the people of Cwmbran and I hope you will continue to do so.

Many thanks Nigel for all your continued hard work and dedication

Where are you from?

Originally Cwmbran now Turkey

Do you have any comments?

Hello from Turkey.

I stumbled across this web site while looking for an address and got hooked for several hours.  What memories came flooding back, particularly looking at old photographs of Cwmbran:  fondly remembered teachers at West Pontnewydd school, Mrs Garrett, Miss Beese and most of all Danny Collins (what a man),  the group of shops at Oakfield, newly built when my family arrived there from Bournemouth, various locations in old Cwmbran, the clock in the village (what a tatty old bus shelter), Saturday mornings going to the library and many many more.

I sent the link to my brother in law, Doug Kelly, as I knew he would enjoy the content and he has asked me to get in touch so here I am.

Having spent the greater part of my life migrating between Bournemouth and the Cwmbran/Grifithstown area my husband and I have finally settled in the beautiful country of Turkey, about 15km from Bodrum.  We have been here for almost 2 years and love our new life, place, people and culture.

I will endeavour to gather my thoughts, at some stage, and put the proverbial pen to paper with some recollections of my time in Cwmbran and perhaps get in touch with some long lost friends.

For the time being I'll just say thank you for a very pleasant trip down memory lane and look forward to more visits.

Fond regards

Formerly from Hill street, Cwmbran until 1950; then moved to a new house with my parents and brothers to South Road, Oakfield park------- now residing in Dorset, 5 miles from Bournemouth.

After serving 9 years in the RAF moved to Dorset.

The website was told to me by my sister-in-law who now lives in Turkey, she came across it by accident and informed me about it, what a good site it is as well, it brought back so many memories, I have printed off some copies of some of the info etc; and passed it on to two of my brothers.

Keep up the good work!

By the way  when I looked up the website today (25/1/09) and clicked on the Guest Book, the first entry is from  Robin Carter, he lived next door, I lived at number 27 South Road, I intend to get in touch with him via e mail.

Perth -Western Australia

Do you have any comments?

After Nearly 35 years of travelling around the world, merchant navy 6years, New Zealand 11 years

Western Australia 18 years. And 5 children later, I have discovered this great site..

Born and bred in Cwmbran (Oakfield) 1951 Llantarnam secondary modern ( yes I remember Harold put your hand out boy Waters,- Len Ill kick your arse if you dont tackle Constance etc).

Walks as a child, up the mountain, .Croesy dance, drinking gallons of ale in the Oakfield, that cold winter of 1963 etc.

My mum still lives old Cwmbran (the village), and is now 87.

She was a district nurse in Cwmbran for many years, and in the early days rode a bike, usually from Oakfield to Henllys.

I have been back home (Cwmbran will always be home to me) a couple of times over the years, and I could hardly believe the changes, some for the good, and some not so good. Whatever happened to the village?

For those who can remember me, I lived at 25, south road Oakfield, with my mum Joan my dad Max, my brother Mark, and my sister Ann.

I hope to visit Cwmbran in the not too distant future, and see some of my relatives.

Auckland -New Zealand

Do you have any comments?

I have lived in Auckland New Zealand since 1981.

My family is from Cwmbran. (25, Tregonin Terrace - is that the correct spelling??). My uncle, Harry Higginson and his family, lived there all of his life just about.  Uncle Cyril went to Tenby, where he had a guest house. My grumpy father, Archibald Higginson passed away 20 years ago.  My Brother Don lives in Essex, England and my sister, Valerie in Sydney, Australia.

I have visited three times over the years but not been able to find any of my relatives - I would love to have contact with them, if anyone can help.

Please help if you can.  I feel so very Welsh, if that makes sense, and always follow the Red Dragons, even against the All Blacks!

My best wishes to every Welsh person on the planet - I love you all.

Thanks for facilitating a marvellous website.  It brought a tear to my eye.

Sincere regards,

Eddie.

I love the site, and have spent hours on here reading everyone's comments about the good ole days, I lost my mum to breast cancer and I am no longer in contact with my dad, so its wonderful to be able to come on the site and read stories about how Cwmbran used to be; it almost makes me want to go back in time. The website  has made me more aware of our town and its changes, and I am now photographing any of the like so that I may too tell my children when they grow up of my time in Cwmbran.

And not before time I might add.

I read David Orphan's comments about you and especially the great work you have done for the canal, who could argue with that?
The canal has never looked better, its much less litter free and it seems local traders are doing their bit regarding shopping trolleys and the like,

Local people owe you a great deal for all the good work that you have done, not only for the canal but extending your site to others who have left our shores,
I myself have found endless old school friends and long lost neighbours, I myself would also like to say "thank you Nigel".

Hi Nigel:     I've just been introduced to this site by Brian Howard an old St. Dials' schoolchum, circa 1948.  Reading through the contributions has brought back so many old memories.  My family was one of the Lucas families, transplanted from Birmingham in 1940, to help start the Ministry of Aircraft Production factory in Grange Road.  We lived until 1950 at Court Farm Estate,  Llantarnam, before moving to live on the Caerleon Road in Llanfrechfa, where my mother resided until her death in 1997.   My father, Walter James Perry, owned an engineering business in the Avondale Industrial Estate.   After High School and University I lived with my wife in Bath Road, Llanfrechfa, for a year or two before emigrating to Canada.  I have lived in West Vancouver, British Columbia for the last 32 years and frequently visit South Wales where I still have family, my sister and her family living in Abergavenny.   It was wonderful to see and hear so many familiar sights and stories on your web page.  I will be a regular visitor. Thank you so much.

With Kindest Regards..John W. Perry.

Very good site. I now live in Wollongong Australia, but miss Cwmbran very much. I was in Cwmbran last year for three weeks visiting family, and saw big changes to the place since I was last there in 1991 (all for the better, except for all those speed cameras) Thanks to people like you I can still do a tour of the old place and bring back many happy memories, keep up the good work.
