.. Kate's Bears ..

This `Family Group of Bears` entitled `Kate's Bears`, was commissioned by the Welsh Arts Council in 1973 and presented to St. Dials Infants School in June 1975. The sculptor was Anthony Stevens. The school used to be called St. Dials Infants Three Bears School. The name was changed in 1991 to Ysgol Gymraeg Cwmbran.


... Situated at the Water Garden, Town Centre - `The Badger` which is one of six tiled panels which originally formed parts of a much larger Mural that was originally sited on the wall of the entrance to the `Up and Under` Public House which was near the pedestrian ramp, leading to the old Sainsbury's car park.

An Inscription running along the top of the original Mural stated:

This mural is a gift to the people of Cwmbran, it was provided by J.Sainsbury Plc. with the development Corporation & the Cwmbran arts trust. It was designed and created by Polly Hope 1983-84.

Situated in the Water Garden, Town Centre. Cwmbran`s latest `Work of Art` is a bronze sculpture by the late Adrian Sorrell.

It is dedicated to the memory of Tessa Hodge, founding chairman of Cwmbran Arts Trust.

The only replica of a statue in Hyde Park, given to the People by MEPC plc. in association with Cwmbran Development Corporation.

Unveiled on the 6th July 1982 by Sir Gerald Thorley TD FRICS Chairman of MEPC plc.

GWENT HOUSE MURALS

Situated on the outside wall of Gwent House,in Gwent Square,Town Centre you can see three  individual panels.

These murals, designed by Henry and Joyce Collins, were unveiled by Sir William Crawshay DSO,  Chairman of the Welsh Arts Council and presented to the town of Cwmbran in 1974 by the Cwmbran Arts Trust.

Figure1. Caradog, or Caractacus, leader of the Silures who was defeated by the Romans around AD51. Together with his family, he was led in chains through the streets of Rome. His dignified bearing so impressed the Emperor Claudius that he was given his liberty.

Figure 2. The Romans began building the camp at Caerleon in AD75. It was occupied by the Second Augustan Legion. The soldier depicted is identified by the legionary mark LEG 11 Aug.

 

Figure1. After the defeat of Harold by William the Conqueror, Gwent was occupied by the Normans, represented here by a Norman soldier.

Figure 2. The 12th century writer Giraldus refers to the warlike aptitude of the Welsh. Wales became a recruiting ground for soldiers following the annexation of Wales by Edward 1. The Welsh bowmen won the battle against Wallace for Edward ` at Falkirk in1298.

The Bowmen of Gwent led the army of Edward 111, under the Black Prince ( Prince of Wales ) into victory at the battle of Crecy in 1346. Welsh bowmen were again very much involved in the victory of Henry V ( born in Monmouth ) at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.

 

Figure1. Depicted is a Monk from Llantarnam abbey which was established in the 12th Century.

Figure2. Is a miner representing one of the industry of the area. The Cwmbran coal mine was opened in 1879. In the early 19th century the Patent Nut and Bolt Co. was producing iron in this area. This company was subsequently bought by Guest Keen and Nettlefold.

... The smaller panels either side of the figures portray the many castles and rivers of Gwent, the Bessemer Steel Converter and the tools of the builders of the town. The Red Dragon of Cadwalader was carried by the Yeoman of Henry V11`s guard at Bosworth Field when he defeated Richard 111 and became the first Tudor King ...
