This photograph, from the mid sixties shows a Bristol bus (`bus` is a shortened version of `omnibus`, Latin "for everyone" ) operated by `Red & White`. As it progresses up Maendy Way to the bus terminus at Upper Cwmbran, to the right is the Yew Tree Public House and Maendy shops are adjacent to the bus stop .. N.b. Did you notice the motor bike and side car?
Can anyone remember the `HOME and COLONIAL` shop, just above the steps (circa 1960`s)
Ian Spencer responds:- Yes, I can, another shop in the row, a haberdashery belonged to my Dad and was called "J. Spencer and Sons (Fabrics) Limited. I, being one of the sons. My father had another in Ventnor road, Old Cwmbran, also one in Oakfield shops and one more in Croesyceiliog ... all of the same name.
The other shops in the row starting from Maendy Way were:-
Fourboys - Newspaper/post office/sweet shop, then came the Bakery; down the slope to the Co-op; Then my Dad`s shop - J.Spencer and Sons (Fabrics) Ltd. Then the Chemist followed by two more shops that I can't remember. Then a Greengrocers and finally the Home and Colonial store.
A SPENCER'S advertisement appeared in the CWMBRAN NEW TOWN ADVERTISER January 14th 1960

Mike Drury relates:
Top of the line was Fourbouys, originally managed by Mr and Mrs Halliday, at the latter end of the Fourbouys life it was managed by Mr and Mrs Miller.Next was Hughes' Bakery where the less fortunate amongst us could but stale cakes for a knock down price the following day.
Next down the ramp was the Co-operative , then there was Spencers drapers, then Chalmers chemist run by Mr Lannigan, after that E,Stanley Jones the butcher, then the Greengrocers run by Mr and Mrs Pickering, lastly the Home and Colonial run by Mr, and Mrs, Cook two lovely people who gave me a Saturday job which included, delivering groceries in that huge heavy bike with the frame at the front to hold the boxes. I also had to clean the weights, sweep up and clean the yard.Great days, lovely memories.
Tom Absalom remembers Maendy Shops - West Pontnewydd:
Hi, I remember the Home and Colonial store which was in the same block as Spencer`s Drapery. I used to deliver groceries after school and on Saturdays. On Saturdays a guy called Eddie used to drive up from the Oakfield branch to deliver the bulk order and I used to look forward to going out with him. He was such a laugh! He married Shirley Fields who also worked in the branch. The manager was Mr. Cook and ably assisted by his good wife Mrs Cook. I remember Ian, well we went to school together. Llantarnam Secondary Modern as it was known then. Hi Ian I'm sure that you will remember me. Tom Absalom.
There was also a newsagent on the site called Fourboys; it was the nearest to Maendy Way which was also the Post office.
My goodness how nice to have all these memories flooding back. I now live in Coventry and have done for 31 yrs for my sins.. No I wasnt sent there lol I only lived in Cwmbran for 10 yrs but I have soooo many fond memories . Keep up the good work and if anyone remembers me well just email me [email protected]

This photograph, from my youth (circa 1958), shows the splendid and magnificent Welsh Dragon ( I remember it was vivid red), created by the hard work and dedication of the helpers from the Community Hall. The dragon was the centre piece on the `float` (flat bed lorry) ,that was West Pontnewydd`s `entry` in the yearly Cwmbran Carnival.

MessageI was a local at the yew tree for many years as I lived at 56 Maendy Wood Rise .(just down the road). This pub was kept for many years by Dixie Deans (ex Everton Fc) son. Dixie would visit regularly and was held in high esteem by the locals. |
MessageI used to go to the community centre in West Pontnewydd with some friends. Jane & Cheryl Herbert, Sian Curtis, Joanne Fry & Sharon Pask. The year was about 1969 and I was 9 years old -a lady by the name of Mrs Cadwell used to run it. We used to put on plays and they used to hold talent contest. My family emigrated to Australia in 1971. I am married with two children, and we are coming over for a 10 weeks holiday in May 2005. |
The Yew Tree, was one of the "community pubs" designed to create an instant "community spirit". As young-ish children living in the prefabs at Pen y Parc, we would come over sometimes in the evening and buy pop and crisps at the off license counter, feeling very wicked and hoping our mothers would never find out we had "been to a pub"!
Of course, back in the 60s, it still had, as did most pubs then, two bars, the lounge and public bars. Dress standards were enforced for the lounge bar, and beer was a penny more. Don't know if they still have the skittle alley,
In the 1970s my mother worked there, the landlord's father/father-in-law was a former well known professional footballer Dixie Dean.
I too remember the community hall just off Maendy Way! I remember winning a dancing competition there in June 1968! Oh those were the days!! I also remember Denise Massey, who I have not seen for about a year, would love to hear from you! "I wish I had kept up with the line dancing"!!
