.. Head Office and Works of Saunders Valve Co. Ltd - Grange Road (date unknown) ..
Norman Nicholas responds: This photograph looks like the original Saunders Valve factory site before any extensions and the car park were built. I believe the factory to the right may have been Hot Press Products which Saunders Valve bought at a later date which was the main production and machine shop area. That has since been demolished after Saunders (now Crane Process Flow) moved production to India. I worked at Saunders Valve for 40 years from 1965 until 2005 and in that time it went from 2,500 employees to its present workforce of about 175.(2010) It Hs been sold several times, firstly by the original directors to Gallagher (the tobacco people who made Benson & Hedges cigarettes) then to Alfa Laval (The milking machine manufacturer who also had a factory in Oakfield) and lastly to Crane Valves - an American company who are the present owners.

Hmm, I wonder where this is ? ..
John Howard responds: This is the faade of Llanfrechfa Grange. It became a Maternity Hospital in the 1940s and a Mental Institution in the 1960s. Edward, Prince of Wales representing his father George V stayed over here when he visited Cwmbrn and the Eastern Valley district of South Wales in the late 1920s. These tours at the time of the 1930s to areas of such high unemployment, economic depression and deprivation in Britain made Edward very popular with the working class. . . Its also where I was born in 1949.
